Volunteer Service Deferment
If you are actively serving in the Peace Corps or in an ACTION program,
or are a full-time paid volunteer in a tax-exempt organization, and you have agreed
to serve for at least one year, you may qualify for a public service deferment.
This deferment postpones payments due on your student loan account during your service
for up to a total of 36 months (three years).
To obtain the public service deferment, you will need to supply a certification
of your service from an authorized official on a deferment request form (see below).
If you are a volunteer in a tax-exempt organization, you must also be able to certify
that you are:
|
Serving full-time in a tax-exempt
organization, as defined in Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986;
|
|
Assisting low income people and
their communities in eliminating poverty and poverty-related human, social, and
environmental conditions;
|
|
Not earning more than the Federal
minimum wage;
|
|
Not engaging in religion-related
activities as part of your duties.
