Volunteer
Service Deferment
If you are
actively serving in the Peace Corps or in an ACTION program, or are a full-time paid volunteer in a tax-exempt organization, and
you have agreed to serve for at least one year, you may qualify for a public service deferment. This deferment postpones
payments due on your student loan account during your service for up to a total of 36 months (three years).
To obtain the public
service deferment, you will need to supply a certification of your service from an authorized official on a deferment request
form (see below). If you are a volunteer in a tax-exempt organization, you must
also be able to certify that you are:
 | Serving
full-time in a tax-exempt organization, as defined in Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986; |
 | Assisting
low income people and their communities in eliminating poverty and poverty-related human, social, and environmental
conditions; |
 | Not
earning more than the Federal minimum wage; |
 | Not
engaging in religion-related activities as part of your duties. |
If you think you may
qualify for this type of deferment, click here to view and print a public
service deferment request form. Please read the form carefully to make sure you
qualify, and follow the instructions on the form.
If you have loans
that are serviced by more than one servicer, please print a form for each servicer and print the name or your servicer on each
form. Mail your completed form(s) to us at:
