Total and Permanent Disability Discharge

If you are not able to work or go to school because you are totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify to have your student loans discharged (i.e., forgiven). To qualify for a discharge of your loans based on your disability, you must:

	Not be able to work or go to school because of your disability.
	Permanently disabled. This means that your condition is not expected to significantly improve.
	Have your condition certified by a doctor of medicine (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.). Chiropractors or other health care professionals may not certify.
	If your condition existed at the time you took out your student loan(s), you must show that it has significantly deteriorated since then.
