Total and Permanent Disability Discharge

If you are not able to work or go to school because you are totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify to have your student loans discharged (i.e., forgiven). To qualify for a discharge of your loans based on your disability, you must:

bulletNot be able to work or go to school because of your disability.
bulletBe permanently disabled. This means that your condition is not expected to significantly improve.
bulletHave your condition certified by a doctor of medicine (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.).  Chiropractors or other health care professionals may not certify.

If your condition existed at the time you took out your student loan(s), you must show that it has significantly deteriorated since then.

If you think you may qualify for a discharge of your loans, click here to view and print a disability discharge request form. Please read the form carefully to make sure you qualify, and follow the instructions on the form.

If, after reading the form, you think that you do not qualify for a disability discharge, please view any other options on this Results page, or return to the Solution Finder to make another selection.
